3 Tips For Picking A Flexible Pond Liner

Posted on

Just like its name suggests, flexible pond liners give you maximum flexibility when it comes to choosing the shape and size of your backyard pond. Before rushing out to purchase a liner, it's important to know exactly what you are looking for. Not all pond liners are created equal. The following tips can ensure you get the best liner for your pond's design.

Tip #1: Buy More Than You Need

You do not want any seams on your pond liner, since these will simply become areas of slow leakage. To avoid this, make sure the liner you choose is at least a foot wider than the pond on all sides. Two or three feet wider is even better. You can always trim off extra but you cannot add more. Not only do you need some overlap onto the shore line around the pond, you may also need some extra width or length to form the pond into deeper areas or cut outs. The more irregular the shape of your pond, the more likely it is that you will need extra liner.

Tip #2: Skip the Fancy Colors

Pond liners are available in a variety of colors, with black, blue, green, and brown being the most common. Black is the best option by far, because it looks the most like a natural pond. This is because the soil at the bottom of a real pond is generally black. Black liners allow the water to achieve maximum reflection, so it is more likely to mirror the sky or plants you are floating in the water. If you can't get black, a dark brown is the next best option, followed by a dark green. Skip blue unless you want your pond to resemble a dingy swimming pool.

Tip #3: Know the Material Options

There are a variety of materials to choose from when it comes to liners. The three basic materials are as follows:

  • PVC

  • High density polyethylene (HDPE)

  • Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)

PVC is usually the most common because it is reasonably durable and it is resistant to UV damage from the sun. HDPE is also durable, but it is more prone to sun damage. Opt for this liner only if you are putting your pond in a heavily shaded area. EPDM offers the longest lifespan, is durable, and is UV resistant. It is by far the best choice, but it isn't always as easy to find as PVC.
